Robert Earl Shackles' Obituary
Robert “Bob” Shackles passed away on August 31, 2013 at Promise Hospital in Oxford, FL he was 86 years old.
Bob was placed in an orphanage during the depression and from there he became a foster child.
Bob served his country during WW2 in both the Pacific and European theaters of war. He fought on land and sea during the battle of Okinawa in the Pacific and he was discharged after the atomic bombs were dropped. Bob re-enlisted in the Army and volunteered for Special Forces training with the Army 82nd Airborne Division 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment after completing Jump School. When his unit was sent home in 1946 Bob was transferred to Gen. Eisenhower’s (SHAEF) HQ. at Frankfurt Germany where he served the remainder of his enlistment. When he was discharged Bob joined the Army Reserves and was discharged from the Reserves in May 1950.
In April 1947 Bob married Norma Lou Hammons the daughter of Ennis and Orpha Hammons of Armstrong, Missouri and they have four children Karen Dotterer (Gary) of Gold Canyon, Arizona, Wanda Johnson (Greg) of Belleview, Florida, John Shackles (Cyndy) of Oxford, Florida and Ronald Shackles (Jennifer) of Jarrell, Texas. Bob and Norma have nine grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren. Bob was proceeded in death by his foster parents Everett and Hallie Flaspohler and four brothers and one sister. Bob was District Sales Manager with the Ralston Purina Co. retiring after 20 years of service. He and Norma purchased the family farm where they raised cattle, hogs and grain and they later purchased and managed the Glasgow United Super Market changing the name of the grocery to Shacks United Super. Bob was a member of the Brookfield Jr. Chamber of Commerce, a long time member of the Coffeyville Kansas VFW, and later the Belleview, FL VFW, the Kiwanis club, the Rotary club, and he was Chairman of the Tri-County Right to life. Bob was a Baptist Lay Minister serving churches in central Missouri. Funeral Services will be conducted Thursday, September 5, 2013 at 11:00AM at the First Baptist Church of Oxford, FL. with Dr. Don Manley officiating and Military Burial conducted by the Belleview VFW at the Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, FL. A Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 4, 2013 from 7:00PM to 9:00PM at Banks, Page-Theus Funeral Home, Wildwood, FL. Memorial Contributions can be made to the First Baptist Church at 4060 C.R. 108 Oxford, FL 34484, in Honor of Robert Shackles.
