My husband, Bob, and I remember him as a very caring neighbor. This is a funny story about him. We lived on Farm-to-Market Road with our four children, and the Meeks lived behind us in the valley. One day, Dick called me to tell me not to let the children play out in the woods because he had found some animal droppings that he thought might be from a bobcat. Of course, we kept the kids in the house. The next day, Dick called me with a big laugh and said that it was okay to let them play outside - those droppings were from the "world's largest raccoon". We all got a good laugh out of that one, but it showed what a good neighbor he was. He is missed.
Thank you for teaching me to fly fish; we will fish together again one day.
My memories of Richard Meek go all the way back to the late fifties and early sixties in New Hyde Park. I was one of the neighborhood boys who hung around their house to be with his beautiful daughters. He treated us with respect and lots of humor. He once showed me how to make a spice cabinet for my mother for Christmas. He actually did most of the work and supplied the material. I don't think I ever told him how much I appreciated his friendship. He lived a long life and will be missed by all. Our thoughts and prayers are with all his family at this difficult time.

I've been thinking about my grandpa a lot this last year. I think about going out into the canal in the tiny metal motorboat...not something I would do today with my knowledge of crocs. I think about catching tiny fish with a net, and granny and grandpa taking care of them after we went North again. I think about those amazing pineapple shakes, and how it became a tradition. I think of when I told him I wanted to go to Romania and he told me to leave them and their religion alone, that I didn't need to go lead a crusade over there. But I guess the memory that makes me smile the most was last year...my mom had already been down for two weeks and I was coming later. I took the flight and the shuttle by myself and as we pulled up to the house, my mom and grandpa were standing in the driveway waiting for me. All the ladies were ooooing and aaaahing over how cute he was. The man didn't even have to come in contact with women, they just loved him from afar. I'll miss my grandpa very much, I'll miss all the sweet and even not so sweet lol, I words. I'll miss his songs and his stories. I'll miss being his only granddaughter. Love you grandpa, sip you through a straw.
I first met Dick Meek in the 80s when he and Virginia lived next door to my in-laws, Ted and Alice Palmer. Dick and Ted were best friends and shared some of the same hobbies. I remember when they put up a purple martin house near their property line.
Dick always struck me as a sort of Renaissance man with a variety of interests and hobbies. He enjoyed photography, computers, and In the evenings I could hear him playing his electronic organ. Later on after, Ted and Alice passed away, we bought their house and we would continue to see Dick from time to time. In later years, I would play "Happy Birthday" to him on my trombone and he seemed to get a kick out of it. Dick loved life and seemed to live it to the maximum. I will miss him so much. May God's grace be with his daughters, grand children and great-grandchildren at this time.
I'm so sorry to hear about your father. I always liked him and felt comfortable around him when we were kids in New Hyde Park, LI. For some reason the memory of him always telling your girls to "stand up straight" sticks in my mind. But of course he was a good guy...he was a Pisces!

My memory of Mr Meek goes way back when I was a young girl growing up in Brewster, NY. I was at the Meek residence often hanging out with Anne & Mr Meek would always welcome me with opened arms. I looked forward to seeing him because of his warmth & humor. He always took the time to ask me about how I was doing even though he was busy. Then as years past, I was privileged having lunch with both Mr & Mrs Meek along with my parents in Fla.. Again Mr Meek was as warm & funny as I had remembered him. It was such a gift to know him. I was blessed indeed!
