James Joseph “O’Bie” O’Brien, 82, of The Villages, Florida passed away Tuesday, October 28, 2014. O’Bie was born January 14, 1932 in Chicago, IL to the late Joseph G. and Naomi M. Maroney O’Brien. He was a retired from the U.S. Coast Guard as a Chief Warrant Officer serving in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars serving on the Boston Lightship Pollack (LV114 / WAL536), Bering Strait (in Vietnam), Cook Inlet, Matagorda, Humboldt. Cook Inlet, and USCG Stations in Boston, Rockland, ME, and Alameda, CA. Following retirement, O’Bie worked for Deluxe Systems Inc. in Avon, Mass.
O’Bie was a Catholic, Past President of the VFW Post 1046 in Brockton and enjoyed giving to charities; history; cooking; Irish singing; and Country & Western music. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, The Retired Officers Association, and Military Officers Association of America. O’Bie moved from Brockton, Mass to The Villages, FL in 2012.
Survivors include his sons, Jack Deschaine and Stephen (Frances) Deschaine; sister, Judie O'Brien Johnson; 9 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Betty P. O’Brien of Portland, ME. In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by his sister Kathleen “Kay” O’Brien of Chicago, IL and his loving dog Seamus.
Graveside services will be held on Monday, November 17, 2014 at 11 am at Forest City Cemetery.
