Ruth had retired as an executive secretary for Kraft Foods in 1971 after 44 years of service. Ruth enjoyed playing music; she was talented with all keyboard instruments including the organ, piano and accordion. One of her first paying jobs was playing in the theater for the silent movies, after retiring and moving to Continental Country Club, she played for a group of singers in Continental and they not only entertained fellow residents at the clubhouse, but traveled to many of the local nursing homes to “cheer up the old folks” as she put it (Ruth was at that time in her late 80’s and early 90’s). She enjoyed playing the organ for her church, the First Presbyterian Church of Wildwood, until she was 95 years old. While working in Danville she was very active in the community, belonging to her church as well as the Business Professional Women’s Club, the Daughter’s of the American Revolution and it’s Red Hat Club, and the Order of the Eastern Star, along with many other organizations.
