Robert Donald Alexander's Obituary
Robert Donald Alexander - Born February 22, 1928 in Asheville, North Carolina and died November 9, 2011 under the care of Cornerstone Hospice in The Villages, Florida. His parents, Benjamin Frederick and Lucille Jones Alexander, of Asheville pre-deceased him. As a young boy he had a winning paper route, attended the soda fountain at the Biltmore Drug Store, loved high school basketball using every spare moment practicing the game and on the court was known as “Fast Bob”. One of the joys of his life was spending time with his paternal grandparents, Benjamin Julian and Georgia S. Alexander in Fairview. His maternal grandparents, Edwin and Essie Jones of Hickory died before he was born. He enlisted in the US Navy and served as a Y3 Petty Officer. He was on the USS Yellowstone and later served in the US Air Force as a Staff Sergeant. In these branches of service for his nation he served on ship in the Mediterranean and Korea. He attended Asheville Biltmore College. In civilian life his business interests were office supply, heavy equipment, numismatics and private investigating. He is survived by his daughter, Susan Alexander Harmon of Murphy, North Carolina and grandson, Gregory Harmon, two sisters Patricia Lynn Alexander Masters and her husband, Allen of Asheville and sister, Margaret (Peggy) Alexander Bell of Dallas plus nieces and nephews: Stephen Allen Masters and Kim Ellswich of Florida, Lisa Masters Brooks and her husband William of NYC. Mark Alexander Masters and his wife, Sherry of N. C., Margaret Anne Bell Lindstrom and husband, Jack, Benjamin Clayton Bell, Jr., and wife, Janie, Virginia Lucille Bell Petty and husband, Scott and the Rev. Dr. Lemuel Nelson Bell, II, and his wife, Julie all of Dallas plus numerous great nieces and nephews. Having been consumed with addictions for many years he often told the story of suddenly on a particular afternoon being freed from the powerful urge. While there was no way to undo the past he was grateful in his final years that prayers had been answered. The family expresses gratitude for the care of the staff at the V A Hospital in Gainesville, Florida, Arbor Village in Wildwood, Florida and Cornerstone Hospice at The Villages, Florida.
