Bob and I first met at the Ft. Hamilton Military Entrance Processing Station in Brooklyn, NY on Halloween, 1966. 15 minutes later we were on extra duty because we both fell asleep after being told not to ... and so began a 56 year friendship. We quickly found out that we'd both signed up for that "ASA thing" (Army Security Agency) and from that point on - we were always on the same orders! Basic Training at Ft Dix, NJ then to Ft Gordon, GA for 31E20 school then shipped off to the 508th ASA group in Korea for 13 months then back to Ft Devens, MA to (you guessed it) learn how to fix the same equipment we'd been working on for 13 months in Korea and, finally, off to Herzo Base in Germany for the remainder of our enlistment.
We then each went our separate ways, losing touch with each other, until I was able to locate him with the help of other, willing ex-ASA helpers. At that point, we met up again in Florida and picked up right where we'd left off! Friends and brothers can do that.
A great guy, a friend indeed and his passing leaves an ache but I'm so much better for having known him.
