John Stephen Fichter's Obituary
John Stephen Fichter, 88, a long time resident of Orange Park, passed away Monday, November 16, 2015. Mr. Fichter was born August 7, 1927 in Hopewell, VA to Jack and Agnes (Rider) Fichter. He entered the US Navy at the age of 16 and served from 1943-1946, with LST 568 in the Pacific Theatre in WWII. John then joined the Air Force, where he also served in the Korean Conflict, and made it his first career retiring in 1965 into the reserves and retiring from the reserves in 1973. His second career was civil service with Naval Aviation Engineering Service Unit (NAESU), ultimately ending up in Jacksonville NAS where he worked for many years before retiring. John is a member of St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Orange Park. He had many interests including a love for animals, rooting for the Cincinnati Reds, reading and golf, to name a few. Survivors include his children Jan Fichter Jones and her husband, Don, of San Diego, CA, John Gordon Fichter of Navarre, FL, Jeanne Fichter Lightcap of Ponte Vedra, FL, Jill Elizabeth Fichter of Jacksonville, FL; brother, Wilbur “Buck” Fichter of Williamsburg, VA; grandchildren, Jennifer Fichter, Lauren Fichter, Matthew Lightcap and Christopher Lightcap; 3 great-grandchildren and his canine companion, Levi. A funeral mass for John will be held 11:00am, Tuesday, November 24, 2015 in the St. Catherine’s Catholic Church, 1649 Kingsley Ave, Orange Park. Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA. In lieu of flowers, those wishing may make a donation in John’s name to K-9s for Warriors, 114 Camp K9 Road, Ponte Vedra, FL 32081.
