John Durwin Dyess' Obituary
John Durwin Dyess, 73, of Sumterville, Floria passed away on Friday, April 11, 2025. Born on October 13, 1951, in Lake County, he was the son of Johnnie A. Dyess and wife Theda P. (Hall) of Wildwood, Florida. His parents and brother Drew C. Dyess of Live Oak, Florida, preceded him in death.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy (Hunt) Dyess; son James Bradley Dyess, daughter-in-law Crystal, their children Jessica, Jase and Ava and his nephew Keith Dyess.
He was a conductor for CSX railroad and served there for 30 years with a dual career in the Florida Army National Guard.
Command Sergeant Major (CSM) John D. Dyess (Retired) held numerous awards including The Florida Cross, The Florida Commendation Medal, and The United States of America Bronze Star Medal. He held many ranks and duty locations during his military career. One of his favorites was as First Sergeant of Troop E 153rd Cavalry, 1996-1999. He served overseas in Iraq Operation Freedom, 2003-2004 and retired as CSM of the 3rd battalion 124th infantry of the Florida Army National Guard.
After retirement he was an active member of the Wildwood Tri-city American Legion Post 18 and served as Commander for over ten years.
He loved the Lord, a good horse, a smart dog, a close friend, a good joke and his family. The farm life, serving in the Guard, hunting and fishing were favorite pass times. Hunting in Alabama was an annual sabbatical. He was deeply loved and will be greatly missed.
The life of Command Sergeant Major John Durwin Dyess will be honored on Friday, April 18, 2025, at First Baptist Church, Wildwood. Viewing at 9:00 a.m., service at 11:00 a.m. Interment at Bushnell National Cemetery at 1:30 p.m. with Military Honors.
