George W. Spikes' Obituary
George W. Spikes, 90, Mt. Dora, Florida formerly of Wildwood, Florida, went to be with the Lord on May 20, 2016 at his residence in Mt. Dora, Florida. Mr. Spikes was born on June 11, 1925 in Thomson, Georgia to his parents William Spikes and Callie (Brinkley) Spikes. Mr. Spikes was a former Police Officer for the City of Largo, Florida. He and his wife Grace moved to Wildwood in 1983 from Clearwater, Florida and are members of First Baptist Church of Rutland, Florida. He was a proud Veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Marine Corps and had been sent to Guam to extend the runway for the Enola Gay (The aircraft that dropped the first atomic bomb). He had also been present at Iwo Jima during the flag raising on Mount Suribachi, as well as being one of the first into Hiroshima and Nagasaki after the Atomic Bomb was dropped. He had a heartfelt love to sing all his life and enjoyed fishing. He is survived by his loving wife of 69 years: Grace Spikes of Mt. Dora, FL; a daughter: Debra (Frank) Volpe of Citrus Springs, FL; a brother: Billy (Yvonne) Spikes of Tavares, FL; a grandson: Mike (Geri) Paxton of Wildwood, FL. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, May 27 at 10:00AM at Banks, Page-Theus Funeral Home, Wildwood, FL. with a visitation to be held on Thursday, May 26, 2016 from 4:00PM to 6:00PM at the funeral home in Wildwood. Burial will follow the funeral at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Florida with Military Honors by the U.S. Marine Corps. On-line condolences may be shared by visiting www.bankspagetheus.com.
