Doyle was the first principal to have enough faith to hire me way back when. He left a legacy at Naches Trail Elementary. Before he retired, he managed to provide a fully functioning computer lab to Naches trail; not a common feature of elementary schools in those days. Mr. Shaffer was my principal when I was a student at Naches Trail Elementary. He was a nice man who would interact with the students, yet strict when necessary. The last thing you wanted was to get sent to his office, but in a good way as it taught us to be respectful of others and to follow the rules. I cannot help but think he had some influence in my decision to pursue a career in the public school setting. I have fond memories of Doyle as principal of Naches Trail where my daughters attended, and then as principal of Kapowsin Elementary where I work. Mr Shaffer was our highly respected Principal at Naches Trail in Spanaway. He kept that school running smoothly, our PTA was a great functioning organization because of his involvement and support. Many a fundraiser was bringing smiles to kids and parents and money into the extra activities, spaghetti dinners were always a great success. Mr. Shaffer was my principal in elementary school. Though it was quite long ago, I still recall the energy and pleasant demeanor he had in his work. Of course, we kids always tried to stay on his good side! His stern side was not what we wanted to court! I was sorry to learn today of Doyle's passing. I was a teacher at Thompson Elementary when he came to the Bethel School District. I would have done my principal internship during his second year had he remained at Thompson. Unfortunately, that was not the case! A few years later I was able to move to Naches Trail and spent a couple of years there before I entered the administrative realm...thanks to his support and recommendation, for which I was truly grateful!!Doyle was not the kind of person who stayed in touch with those he knew from schools/districts where he had worked. Had he been so inclined he would have found a number of folks who appreciated his "straight shooting" style, and we certainly would have welcomed visiting with him from time to time--whether by phone, e-mail, or in person!!I hope that he was able to find happiness through golfing, traveling, and other interests during his retirement years.Sincerely,##imported-begin##Susan Kaelin##imported-end##
