Dolores A. Battle's Obituary
Dolores(Dee) A. Battle, age 79, of Yalaha, FL, left this world and went to be with our Lord on February 15, 2012. She has crossed the river and fought the final war. She has achieved the victory and now she sees the lights of Glory!! She is now at peace and is with her mother, Nora; her father, Orion; her brother, Lowell; and her daughter, Loy. She was born on December 26, 1932 in Anderson, South Carolina. She moved to Lake County in 1991. Dee, as she was known by her friends and Mimi, as she was known by her grandchildren and her great grandchildren was a veteran of the Korean conflict and was proud of her military service in the U.S. Air Force where she served in Special Services. Dee loved to dance as well as being an avid “fisher person”, She also was quite the business woman and entrepreneur, having owned a beauty/cosmetology school in Columbia, South Carolina, serving on the South Carolina State Board of Cosmetology, was a member of the National Board of Cosmetology. Dee was the coauthor of a book on the study of Cosmetology and helped design the test that was used nationally for testing individuals wishing to enter the Cosmetology field. She also taught Cosmetology at Beaufort Technical School in Beaufort, South Carolina. In addition to her teaching career she also had the time to own and operate The Island Theater, a movie theater on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. Dee and her husband Bill, were the owners of The Old Curiosity Shop, an antiques and collectables business. They were, what is known in the business as, “show dealers”, traveling around the country in their motor coach and doing paid admission antique shows in cities such as Atlantic City, Philadelphia, Richmond, Atlanta, Miami, New Orleans, etc. Also Dee is the author of a book “The Best of Bakelite” published by Schiffer Publishing Company in 1996. This book is a collector’s book and features photographs of Bakelite jewelry and other items made from that material. Dee was considered an expert on the subject of Bakelite and Catalin. In 1999, her book was featured in a display of Bakelite and Catalin in the Museum of Modern Art in Rome, Italy. Most recently Dee served as a Poll Deputy for the Lake County Board of Elections and also served as a Guardian ad Litem, an advocate for the best interest of children who are alleged to be abused, neglected or abandoned and involved in court proceedings. She is survived by her loving husband Bill; her sisters, Olarah Lollis of Belton, South Carolina; Olivia Estevez of West Sacramento, California; her half brother Orion Simpson of Seville, Ohio; her son, Tim Singletary of Cayce, South Carolina; her daughter Jill Singletary Guscio of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina; her step daughter, Tracy Troutman of Gainesville, Georgia; stepsons, Bob Battle of Greenwood, Indiana and Evan Battle of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania. She has 13 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews as well as many, many friends. She will be deeply missed by all. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: 1.
