Joan was my cousin and we were so happy every time we saw each other. She was my mama’s (Sandra Phillips Smith) first cousin and they were very close growing up. They are together again with so many of our family members. We would talk for hours and stay up all night catching up when we were together. She was hilarious! And I will miss her terribly!!

I first met Joan over 25 years ago when I was President of the Marion Dragoons. It has been a mutual friendship and a lasting one. I will never forget traveling to North Alabama in 2003 to dedicate a Confederate Soldier's Grave Marker with Joan and Becky. There was so much love and laughter on that trip one can only imagine. Joan was so much fun to be with. I love her and will always cherish the memories I have of her.

You were a wonderful friend and neighbor. Before we ever even really met I knew we were kindred spirits by the tattered flag barely waving from your flagpole. And so my husband and I quietly slipped over to your house and hoisted a crisp brand spanking new Naval Jack hoping you wouldn't be upset- your ecstatic joy was so much more than I could have hoped for. You were so full of life, laughter and the best antidotes a Southern lady could ever repeat and you will be missed dearly by so many.
I'm thankful to have had the privilege of your friendship and kindness. I can only imagine the stitches you have everyone in up there in the heavens. God bless and keep you and God bless your family.

Proud to have gotten to know Joan, though it was for a far too short time. She was a proud sister in the United Daughters of the Confederacy and recently received her 25 year certificate and pin. Joan will be truly missed. Condolences to her family.
The last time I saw Joan, at our Marion Dragoons Summer Social (8/16), she was full of vim & vinegar, in great spirits & she was one of a kind, the Joan I came to know & love. Good memories for sure! When I became President of our UDC Chapter, Joan was and remained one of my biggest cheerleaders.
She encouraged me when I faced the unknown which was often since I'd never done this before, and she always thanked me and showed me much appreciation.
I will always miss the support, encouragement, and strength she gave me.
