Arlene Patricia Yates, 77, of Wildwood, passed on April 19, 2019, in The Villages, Florida. Arlene was born on May 5, 1941, in Powder Springs, Georgia to Ervin Kenneth and Mattie Elizabeth (Thomason) Pigg. Arlene married the love of her life, Walter Yates, on February 24, 1968, in Stone Mountain, Georgia. Arlene and Walter moved to Orange County, Florida soon after they married.
Arlene is survived by her husband of 51 years, Walter; her daughter Jackie Duppenthaler (Don) of Windermere, Florida; sister Clara Nell McCroy of Marietta, Georgia; sister Evelyn Wilder of Bradenton, Florida; three grandchildren: Doug Duppenthaler (Stacey), Eric Duppenthaler (Danielle), and Leah Clough (Scott); and ten great-grandchildren: Cheyenne, Addisyn, Alyse, Kinsley, Ella, Kaiden, Kipton, Emme, Harvey, and Kaysen. Arlene was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother; best known as “Nanny.” Arlene was a bus driver for Orange County Public Schools for 25 years. She retired in 2002 from the job she thoroughly enjoyed. Arlene was a member of the Church of Christ in Powder Springs, Georgia. She loved the ocean; went on several cruises and she loved to spend time at the beach, just watching the waves and listening to the sounds the ocean would give. In her free time, Arlene loved to work with flowers and would make floral arrangements for different occasions or just for fun. She was also known to spend time at the casinos playing the slot machines. Anyone who ever had a meal cooked by Arlene would agree that she was an amazing cook. She loved preparing many home cooked meals for her family and friends. Her smile and laugh could light up any room and she was sure to be the life of the party. Most of all, Arlene was family oriented and loved spending time with her family more than anything else.
A celebration of life will be held at a later time. In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to Cornerstone Hospice in The Villages in honor of Arlene.
