Alex Osters' Obituary
Alexander “Alex or Al” Osters, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, meat cutter, boater, polka dancer, and avid driver, died peacefully at Cornerstone Hospice on Tuesday, November 11, 2014 in The Villages, FL from complications following a heart attack. He was 98.
Alex was born in Dayton, OH, on April 21, 1916. He was one of eight children and was preceded in death by brothers, Walter, Frank, Tony, Nick, John; and two sisters, Fannie and Mary.
After meeting her while dancing, Alex married Florence Wallis on February 15, 1941. They spent over 40 years together, before she passed away in 1982. They had two children, Larry (Janis) Osters and Helen Chessman. The family spent many years boating and fishing on Lake Erie.
After his retirement from Pick-N-Pay as a meat cutter and Flo’s passing, Alex could be found in one of several places. (1) He was hanging out at Dandy Donuts in Willowick debating religion, scratching lottery tickets, reading newspapers, drinking coffee and eating doughnuts. (2) He was polka dancing around the area with his dance partner of 20 years, Jean Roman. (3) He was visiting his daughter Helen and her family on their farm in Windsor, OH with his three grandchildren, Hollie, Heather and Bill (great-grandson Nathan). (4) He was hanging out with his son Larry and his family to help with a project while visiting with his two grandchildren Aaron and Alyson. (5) He was taking a road trip to any number of destinations just because he could. (6) He would tinker in his garage with whatever forlorn broken lawnmower or vacuum cleaner he found on the curb to give it new life. Those who knew Alex knew that if you asked how he was doing your would always get the response of “Miserable, Thank you.” A longtime resident of Willowick, Alex relocated to a warmer climate with his son Larry and Larry’s wife Janis to The Villages in FL. Larry and Janis oversaw his care over the next four and a half years and kept him stocked with Nutty Buddy ice cream cones. Alex will be remember for his generous spirit, wit, polka dancing skills, awesome kielbasa and periogi, his stubborn streak, and most of all for his constant support in the lives of all he loved.
