I just want to share a few memories that I have of my older brother with Mary, Kim, Heather, and Curtis. He was very tolerant with me as I used to go everywhere with him. Don't know if he had to take me but I wentwith him to his friends house ( the Jenkins brothers} to read comic books and trade them. That was a fun thing to do on Sat. night. They lived across town in Gaylord so of course we rode bikes with baskets to hold the comics. We also rode to Sparr, Mi. 6miles east of Gaylord down hill with lots of curves but pushing them on most of theway back. Then there was a time where we porcupine hunting with bows and arrows, didn't get any. By the way he bought me my 25# bow which I still have in my garage. As I said I don't know if he had to take me but I like to think he enjoy my company. It was great to do things with Dick as I looked up to him and I could brag to my friends about our adventures. I also had to help him get the nightcrawlers after the rain on the court house lawn. We went on a double date when I was in high school to Prudenville to go dancing. I don't remember the group that was playing, but I took a cool guy a year older in school for my Sadie Hawkins day date. I fell asleep on the way home and was embarrassed. We played Monopoly all day on Sundays and to this day I haven't play it.He even trusted me to drive his 1956 stick shift Mercury with glass pipes. What fun!! My friends thought I was so lucky as I did. Such a great older brother I repaid him by typing his college papers and checking grammar and spelling.
I will miss him dearly but I have many memories to draw on as do all of you. I don't type as well anymore but I needed and wanted to share these things with you . I'm so glad I got to visit with you this past summer. We didn't get together often because of the different parts of the country we live in. Just know you can keep him in your hearts . The Behrens family wanted to share some memories of my brother and our Uncle. My mom is in poor health currently, but she shared some stories with me about her younger brother Dick. My Mom (Beverly) is the eldest of the family and had her Dad to herself for 5 years, until Dick was born,she said Grandpa always wanted a son. She said he was the cutest baby with curly blonde hair so it was hard to be mad at him as he soon became her dad's favorite. He collected worms at the court house lawn after it rained and sold them in their Gambles store. He raced boats all over Michigan, where his dad would take him to the different races. They even built their own boat in their basement. Mom said, Dick played the Trombone and was good enough to win a week at Interlocken. Dick worked at his Father's gamble store in Gaylord and became a jack of all trades. She said he loved working with his Dad. He then went on to Central Michigan and was in the ROTC. I believe he worked winter break at a local ski resort where he was a Ski Patrol. When my parents got married, Dick was the best man. He married Aunt Judy and they had Kim. We have great memories of skiing with them. I think that is who I got the ski bug from as I still love the ski today. The last couple of years when they came to Michigan I shared stories of all the places I have skied, which brought a smile to both of our faces. They both stopped by in May and we celebrated my Mom's 83rd birthday with my wife Lisa and Mary Ann. It was a great lunch and have to locate the pics. When Judy and Dick got divorced, we had Kim live with us for 1 school year as Dick as in VA working. We had 4 boys and 1 girl, so Kim fit right in. We all loved Aunt Judy, so when Dick brought Mary to Northville to our house to meet her, she had a lot of young eyes on her. She turned out to be a great Sister-in-Law and Aunt to us. We have been blessed to have her in our lives. We are all very proud to call Dick my brother and our Uncle. We were always excited to see him and have fond memories of fast rides on 75 with him and my Dad (Michigan State Police) in his 1970 Mustang Mach 1, 535 HP, Hurst 4 speed, Army Green. My Mom and Aunt Mary went to see him and Mary in 1976 while he was stationed in Germany. They were in Europe for 26 days and stayed the weekends with them in Germany while traveling during the week to different places in Europe and both brought back Clocks. Both of them said it was the trip of a lifetime. Mom and Dad saw them 2 times when they were in Hawaii. Once for 3 weeks and the second time on their 25th anniversary. You can't say all you want in an email about a great guy who has been on this earth for 77 years, but you have to say something. In Dick's honor, reach out to a loved one you haven't spoken to in a while and catch up. You never know when that person may leave us. We are very sad for Mary, Kim, Heather, and Curtis for their loss, but you all know your husband and Dad is in Heaven looking down on you. Dick was a kind, respectful, even tempered, loving, and interesting person. We also wanted to thank him for his service to our country, which is a sacrifice not many of us are willing to do.
