I was just attempting to reconnect with Doug, my best friend from high school and beyond, when I learned of his passing. Doug tried to reach me a couple of years ago when I was in the middle of a struggle with my wife's battle with cancer and just couldn't seem to put the words together to reach out to my best friend from high school and beyond. I know it would have been comforting and so regret my delay. I have thought of Doug and Loretta so often over the past 50 years and wanted him to know that. I will try to post a picture I took of him in 1961 when we were in DC. Doug was such a special person and dear friend. My love and condolences to his family. Dear Wilcox Family, We met Doug and Loretta at 1st Baptist Church of Howell. They were always such a sweet, wonderful couple. Marcus and Gail, you made them so proud. Such bright children from such loving parents. When I was in a car accident in 2004, I asked Doug to fill in for me as the co-op coordinator in Howell. He agreed to do so (even though he had just retired). What a wonderful educator and supportive of students! He was respected by educators throughout the county. I will always remember this family. My late husband met Doug in a class at Western Michigan University when he was about 21 years old. They soon became friends and we got together as couples. We were all newly Weds with little money but, lots of love. We both had our first baby at about the same time. I remember them being at our first house in Kalamazoo with our newborns in their carriers. Gail and Marna were so special and they looked so cute sitting next to each other as we had dinner. We continued in our relationship with them over the span of our lives. We were so blessed by them. We enjoyed many dinners at their house in Howell. I remember one time when Doug and Mary were showing us Marcus baseball cards. They were so proud of Gail and Marcus. They came to our house after we moved to the Lansing area also. We were so sad when Loretta passed away at such a young age. I always her gentleness and her kindness. A couple of months later Doug came to our house by surprise. We were so glad to see him and we had dinner at our house together. It was clear that he was so lonely without Loretta. Much later, when we heard he had found someone to love and cherish, we were so happy to meet his lovely wife, Mary. We could see how happy they both were. We visited once in the villages and we're pleased with the love we saw. There is so much more I could share. I am so sad that God has called him home even though I know he will receive a rich reward in heaven. Doug and Loretta's faith in God was always the rock of their family. Doug was a kind and gentle man whobfeared God.
Dear Mary, Gail, Marcus and family,
I have known Doug since we worked together at Shippy's Color Center in Howell, I think it was around 1974??ish. He was such a good person and always willing to train me in the business field. I learned much from him. His kindness will be remembered by many. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time.

We met Doug a little over 2 years ago at euchre, that Doug & Mary run. We liked him right away, how could you not, he was a very caring person. As we got to know Doug & Mary more with all their involvements in various clubs & charities, we found someone we could call a friend. That friendship was cut way too short, but we know, God has welcomed another angel in Heaven. So Doug, till we meet again, safe travels.
